Lorenzo Sanz Says Title Race Not Over Yet

by David on February 23, 2012

Former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz has dismissed claims that the club already have La Liga wrapped up.

Los Blancos are in devastating form domestically and currently possess a ten-point lead over second-placed Barcelona at the top of the table, prompting some pundits to claim that the title race has already been run.

However, Sanz is warning his former side against complacency, telling Cadena COPE that while “the league seems to have been decided, Madrid do not have the title in their pocket.”

Sanz, who was Madrid president between 1995 and 2000, went on to argue that current coach Jose Mourinho, having come out on top in his power struggle with Jorge Valdano last season, now holds too much sway at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Mourinho has been given power because the people are with him and he is seen as the right figure to lead the club,” he mused.

“But having the lordship of Real Madrid is something else; there are things that are not logical here. It is not good that a coach has so much power.”

After Tuesday night’s Champions League draw with CSKA Moscow, Madrid return to La Liga action this weekend with an away game against Rayo Vallecano.
