Here are some of Jose Mourinho’s comments as Real Madrid progressed to the Champions League semi-finals tonight:
We knew it would be almost impossible for APOEL to come here and beat us 4-1 to go through so it wasn’t easy to motivate the boys because everything was under control, but we did our job. I was able to give some players with a lot of miles in their legs a rest. The objective was to win the match and be in the semi-final, and we did both things.
I’m satisfied with the team’s progress in the Champions League over the past two years. When I got here the team was enduring a dark period in European competition. There were players who had not played in the quarter and semi-finals for a while, and some who never had. Now we’ve had two consecutive seasons in the semi-finals.
We are all working well. The important thing was to win the match as the tie was under control, and it gave us the opportunity to try things out. I am not pleased with the two goals conceded, but you cannot criticise my players. It is normal in a game such as this, with lower intensity.
APOEL have done great in this tournament and leave happy with their two goals tonight. Cristiano Ronaldo always works hard for the team, he is not selfish and he always wants to play. I’m happy for Kaká, and also with Ángel Di María and José Callejón. I’m happy for everyone. Bayern will be a great semi-final. FC Barcelona will play in the final, while the tie between Real Madrid and Bayern München will be more even.
